REPEAT THE QUESTION PLEASE!

If I have a written health and safety program for a specific area, do I need to have employee training in these areas as well?
Here are a few of the many health and safety program areas that require employee training:

    Hazard Communication
    Lockout
    Tag-out
    Confined Space Entry
    Contingency Plans
    HAZWOPPER
    Machine Guarding

A Grain of Salt is Recommended

Mold and mold contamination have been receiving a lot of attention in both print and electronic media. Readers of this brief are warned to consider the source of mold information and the timing of its release before putting the family home on the market at a bargain price and moving to the Mojave. Newspapers and television are usually reliable sources of information, but the content of the information provided can be influenced by the economic demands of the market place.

The mold remediation market has been described as the "Next Asbestos". Unfortunately, the possibility of a growing largely unregulated market appeals to a variety of businesses: consultants, laboratories, home inspectors, cleaning services, asbestos inspectors and remediation contractors. They all know something about mold. Buyer Beware!

QEPA's approach to mold problems is based on several principles. First, we do not recommend extensive sampling or remediation when neither may be necessary. The purpose of sampling is to determine if a mold problem exists. Sampling will almost always show that mold is present - it's present everywhere, all the time.

Second, data must be evaluated critically. When mold is detected in a building, it does not necessarily mean that it is a threat to the health of the inhabitants. Each person's reaction to mold depends on whether they are allergic to mold in general or to a particular species of mold.

Third, use some common sense. If mold is found in a building, it is not necessary to abandon the building, undertake extensive remediation or move. Many questions must be answered before determining the need for remediation.

QEPA's advice to anyone concerned about mold contamination is: Don't panic, talk to more than one "expert" and understand that mold is always present. It is only a problem when it is present in unusually high concentrations or if an individual is sensitive to it.

THINK ABOUT IT!

DID YOU KNOW?

Over the years, OSHA has found that many employers lack expertise in the field of workplace safety and health and welcome assistance by experts in the field.

John L. Henshaw Director of OSHA

In most cases if you have developed a written health and safety program, employees need to have specific training on these programs.
